Notes on September

Summary

this month had me spent. i did, however, emerge victorious from my work's attempt at killing me and i believe i handled all the challenges with more grace than i ever expected i was capable of. in conjunction with the ridiculous pile of BAU shoved at us, we've also been dealing with a ton of workplace restructuring and some distressing news here and there. since work left me exhausted for most of the day, i only really had the energy for a slow essay read and a lot of uma musume training. due to this, i have low expectations that my screentime on my phone this month looks anything but embarrassing, though i can't fault myself for being too tired to do anything else.

my japanese classes have proven to not only be worth the money, but worth blocking a good chunk of my saturday for. they even hand out free coffee, candy, and once had pan de sal with a jar of jam to spread on as much as you wish. being a single 28-year old, i, of course, had hoped and prayed that someone cute would be there to ceremoniously take on the role of my classroom crush but alas, no one has caught my fancy. nevertheless, i quite like my set of classmates and my professor is not just intelligent, but very skilled as explaining what needs to be said.

my friend and i also went to an art fair after class, which i dedicated a blog post to, as i had many thoughts about being surrounded by so much creativity and the academia as a whole.

last worth noting, i got asked to be a bridesmaid to a (different) friends wedding!!!! i was squealing with excitement when i got my friends package which contained her letter, a generous amount of fabric in a gorgeous, deep red satin, and a variety of cookies (she knows me well). this prompted the following days to be intensely dedicated to hunting for dress inpiration on pinterest HAHAHAHA i haven't had a dress tailored for myself in ages so i want to get my moneys worth by picking a style i know i'd fucking EAT in.

01. watched

Dead Poets Society (1989)
i never watched this before and had a vague understanding of the plot but i was still devasted!!!
A brief history of ghosts and spirit photography | V&A
Victoria and Albert Museum
a fun watch on how people managed to create spooky ghost-like photos at a time where resources were very limited. can't help but find it pretty inspiring
The "Death" of the Celebrity Interview
Mina Le
how celebrity interviews have shifted greatly since the early 2000s for better or worse
庭を散歩する木彫りの熊
もんたの日常
obsessed with this gato

02. read

Reality is evil
Drew M Dalton
essay on the meaning of life through the application of the three laws of thermodynamics. i've always had a hard time fully grasping what absurdists see in the philosophy as someone that grew up with a more existentialist view on life. this was the only article to make me understand it and feel a weight lifted off my shoulders. if i read this a few months earlier though, i'd be way more depressed.
The grammar of a god-ocean
Eli K P William
the romantic pursuit of learning to communicate; the human need to know we're not alone. i think the tenacity we have to find life on other planets by opening up pathways for communication is poetic, lonely, and heartwarming.
The Problem of Evil: Why I don't think God is Omnibenevolent
Tim Seyrek
this was a fun read because i love when the format is basically "ok so they say X but what abt Y? surely that means Z, no?" followed by "ok so to ans that, here are my arguments and i want to also address the counterarguments". it just makes it easier to understand and i'm able to establish trust in the author now that i know their thought process writing their piece.
Does Language Shape Thought? From Philosophy to Neuroscience
Tim Seyrek
got in the mood to read about how language affects us. there was one time i tried reading up why some people find it easier to learn languages than others but alas, there are too many psychological, social, mental, and financial variables to consider. it was interesting this article packaged something as paradoxical as the boring and intriguing subject of neuroscience into an easy to digest accompaniment to breakfast.
Why modern life feels meaningless
Omar F. Najjarine
capitalism sux
The Otherworldly Ambitions of R. F. Kuang
Hua Hsu
i actually read this last month but decided to read it again given my Katabasis journey and need for motivation to understand jpn grammar. i've loved listening to Rebeccas interviews so this was a very calming, inspiring read. i could almost hear her while reading between the quotation marks hahahaha
Katabasis
RF Kuang
i was so pleased i found this in one corner of the bookstore since i wasn't expecting them to have stock yet. i've seen the mixed reviews and i, too, have mixed reviews but it was still an enjoyable read. i do think this might be my least favorite of her work but it comes down to preference, i suppose. though, i definitely have something to say about the weak worldbuilding and prose.

03. eaten

Ugoy Ugoy
my dad visited iloilo w his siblings and brought some back and i was obssessed with them. they're like layered, crunchy biscuits topped with granulated sugar(pic from here)
Samyo Sunrise from SaladStop!
my favorite from them this month. it's a delightful mix of roasted chicken, cabbage, lettuce, tofu, bell peppers, and crunchy garlic with a thick peanut butter dressing. i generally am not the biggest fan of bell peppers though so i had them swap it out for pickled radish. yum.
Strawberry Ice Cream Cone Kisses
this tastes exactly like what it's marketing itself to be. it's really refreshing and a good in between of what standard strawberry flavors taste like in the east and west. (pic from here)

i decided to look through what some 5th gen kpop groups came out with recently and i've been loving these. i have to admit, i've also been enjoying listening to my nostalgic 3rd gen kpop bangers and credit it to helping me power through my uma musume grind.
